What is GIS? GIS is an acronym for geographic information systems.
GIS links visual computerized mapping with database operations so that
one can see data in powerful, interactive displays. This functionality comes
primarily from the relationship between map features and their appropriate
database information.
Amron Corporation used Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) ArcView 3.2 as its GIS, and updated to the new ArcView 8.1 in 2002. ESRI is the world's leading GIS software company. The software is located on a desktop HP computer with a 21" monitor for outstanding viewing capabilities. To support offsite work ArcView is also installed on a Dell laptop with a 15" screen. Both have access to a HP DesignJet for large format printing, a HP Color LaserJet for color, and a HP LaserJet 4V/4MV for regular black and white. Amron currently uses GIS to support mission planning in the Navy's Advanced Deployable System program. This involves collecting and displaying oceanographic data, with some processing involved, ranging from point depth soundings of the ocean floor to marine habitat polygons. Examples of data provider are: USGS National Elevation Dataset , National Imagery and Mapping Agency , and the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) . Amron is expanding our GIS business by initially seeking out small businesses who would benefit from basic GIS functionality: computerized image and map display, geocoding (adding point locations defined by street addresses), and spatial analysis. |
