Hand Hygiene Prompts is a patent-pending computer based device, installed on a hospital floor, which collects data from sensors which report room exit and entry, toilet use and hand hygiene compliance. From these data HHP determines if a person should wash their hands, and plays a pre-recorded voice message over a loudspeaker to "Please wash your hands" if they do not, or it may simply record HH compliance. Prompts may be delivered:
· Upon entry or exit from a patient room;
· After toilet use; and
· To encourage antiseptic foam or gel use, if desired.

Feature
Benefit
Non-intrusive
Users are not identified by badges or tags.
Non-threatening
Users are not penalized for not washing.
Non-coercive
HHP reminds rather than commands.
Non-stigmatizing
Users are not identified as having dirty hands.
Non-invasive
No cameras or microphones to violate user privacy.

Tests show that HCWs respond to these voice prompts by increasing their hand hygiene compliance and that when they do, HAIs decrease.
